The Record.

Methodology

How this record is kept

Who is included

A person must show (a) a sustained record of reporting that holds power to account — government of any party, corporations, organised crime, religious, caste or land power; and (c) recognised quality of work, by a reputable award or demonstrable impact; plus at least one of (b) a documented personal cost or refusal to compromise, or (d) a body of work that is primarily reporting rather than commentary.

Prime-time anchors and commentators whose output is mainly opinion are excluded, whatever their politics. The criteria are applied to the conduct of the work, never to the identity of its target.

How claims are sourced

Every dated event — an FIR, an arrest, a bail order, a raid, a threat — carries its own source link. A profile needs at least two independent, reputable public sources or it does not build; the site's own content schema refuses it. Acceptable sources are outlets' own pages, award bodies, court-reporting services, press-freedom organisations and court records. Anonymous blogs, screenshots and social-media claims are not used.

Record, not verdict

Events are described as events, with dates and outcomes. The site draws no conclusion about any third party and adopts no side's label. Where an allegation exists against a journalist, the complainant's or the state's position is set out in a "Contested" section beside the recognition.

Verification and decay

Case statuses change weekly. Each profile shows the date it was last verified; profiles are re-verified at least quarterly, and sooner when a hearing is listed. A confidence level (high, medium, low) states how well the record has been checked against primary sources.

Corrections

Errors are corrected visibly, with a dated note on the profile and an entry in the public corrections log. To report one, write to the address on the contact page with the profile name, the line in question and a source.

Right of reply

Anyone named on this site — a journalist, a complainant, an agency — may request review of a line and supply their position. Requests and outcomes are logged. Living subjects are contacted before publication and may ask for a reduced-detail profile or withdrawal.

Photographs

Portraits are used only under a compatible licence (for example, Wikimedia Commons CC BY or CC BY-SA, with attribution) or with written permission from the subject or outlet. No agency photographs are used without a licence. Where no cleared image exists, a monogram stands in.

Privacy and independence

The site sets no cookies and runs no tracking. It is an independent archive, affiliated with no outlet, party, company or body, and accepts no funding that would compromise that.
